Front Street Is Coming Back: Your Guide to ʻUlu o Lele, Lahaina's New Marketplace
For nearly three years, travelers who love West Maui have been asking the same question: when will Front Street return? This fall, we finally have the first answer. ʻUlu o Lele, a vibrant new marketplace rising at the former Outlets of Maui site off Front and Papalaua Streets, will be the first project to bring storefronts back to Lahaina's historic commercial heart since the 2023 wildfires. Here is everything you need to know about this milestone.

WHAT IS ʻULU O LELE?
ʻUlu o Lele means "growth of Lele" in Hawaiian, honoring Lahaina's traditional name. It is an $8 million, two-year initiative led by the nonprofit Hawaiian Council, supported by its Kākoʻo Maui Fund and a $4 million grant from the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation's Maui Strong Fund.
The marketplace is expected to open in September 2026 and will feature:
-
17 retail units and 8 food trucks, for 25 total vendor spaces
-
A stage with nightly live entertainment
-
Cultural demonstrations led by Native Hawaiian practitioners
-
Farmers markets, nonprofit pop-ups, and family-friendly activities
-
Solar-powered structures throughout
The project is expected to employ around 90 people, and priority for vendor space goes to Lahaina businesses and cultural practitioners displaced by the fires. That means when you shop and dine here, you are directly supporting the families and small businesses rebuilding their lives in West Maui.
WHY THIS MATTERS
ʻUlu o Lele is more than a shopping stop. It is designed as a gathering place, inspired by memories of old Lahaina town shared by kūpuna: a community center with shaded benches, local food, and neighbors catching up over coffee. Businesses selected for the marketplace will also receive priority to remain in the area as Lahaina's permanent commercial district rebuilds.
And the momentum does not stop there. Five commercial building permits have already been issued along Front Street, with buildings in the 600 and 700 blocks being rebuilt to closely match their original historic appearance. More than 500 homes have been completed in Lahaina, with hundreds more permits issued or pending. Recovery is happening, block by block.
HOW VISITORS CAN HELP
Travel to West Maui is one of the most meaningful ways to support recovery. When ʻUlu o Lele opens this fall:
-
Shop local first. Every vendor was chosen with priority given to fire-displaced Lahaina businesses.
-
Come for the evening entertainment. Nightly music and cultural performances give you a reason to linger, and your presence supports the performers and food vendors.
-
Visit with aloha. Lahaina is a community in recovery. Treat the town, its people, and its stories with respect.
