Best Area to Stay on West Maui in a Vacation Condo

There is no single best area; the right one depends on how you like to vacation. KBM's Kaanapali page describes it as West Maui's original resort corridor: a continuous three-mile beach lined with resort towers, two golf courses and the open-air shops and restaurants of Whalers Village. Black Rock (Puu Kekaa) at the north end is a popular snorkeling spot and the site of a nightly cliff-diving ceremony. Kahana sits between Kapalua and Kaanapali on Maui's west coast. KBM lists two Kahana resorts. KBM's resort page describes Royal Kahana as positioned right on Kahana Bay, with oceanfront one-bedroom and two-bedroom villas and views of sunsets and, in season, humpback whales. Kahana Reef is an oceanfront condominium resort that KBM describes as having views of the Pacific and the surrounding islands.

KBM's Kapalua page says Kapalua sits just north of Kaanapali with a quieter, more upscale feel, built around The Bay and The Plantation golf courses. Kapalua Bay Beach is a sheltered, crescent-shaped cove. KBM's Napili page describes Napili as a small, residential bay between Kapalua and Kaanapali, centered on a calm, crescent-shaped cove that is a favorite for snorkeling. KBM lists six Napili communities, including Napili Bay, Napili Point and Napili Shores. Napili Point is a low-rise resort above Honokeana Bay, a three- to five-minute walk from Napili Bay Beach; Napili Shores sits oceanfront on Napili Bay with two pool areas. For families, KBM's resort pages point to pools built for kids in Kaanapali: Honua Kai has seven heated pools, including one with a waterslide; Kaanapali Shores has a garden lagoon pool with a shallow entry; and Maui Kaanapali Villas has a children's wading pool. For a quieter trip, KBM describes Kapalua as quieter and more upscale and Napili as lower-key, and Napili Shores calls itself a low-density resort.
