Beach Gear at Your Hawaii Vacation Rental: What's Provided and What to Bring

Yes, most KBM vacation rentals in Hawaii come with a complimentary beach package: one beach towel per registered guest, an umbrella, two chairs and a cooler. You can carry the whole set down to the sand for the length of your stay, so the first beach morning starts with a short walk instead of a shopping trip. Snorkel gear and boogie boards are the main things that are not included, and our team is glad to point you to a nearby rental shop. Below is what to expect, where to find it, and what is worth packing before you fly.

What is in the beach package

Most KBM units are set up for a beach day before you arrive. The package includes one beach towel for each registered guest, an umbrella, two beach chairs and a cooler. Several of our guest services replies also mention a sand bucket with toys, which small children tend to claim within the first hour. Because contents can vary, we say most units rather than every unit. If your group needs more chairs than the two provided, ask us before you travel and we will tell you what your specific unit has.

Where to find it and how to use it

The set is usually tucked into a closet or sitting out on the lanai, so check both if you do not see it right away. Take it down to the beach whenever you like during your stay. The beach towels can be washed in the unit's washer and dryer, so a sandy afternoon does not mean running short by day three. If you would like a replacement set, let KBM know. At resorts like Honua Kai, a pool and beach towel kiosk near the main pool is included with your resort wristband at no extra charge. That kiosk is separate from the towels in your unit, which makes it handy for pool days when you want to leave the beach set dry.

What is not included, and where to rent it

Snorkel gear and boogie boards are not part of the package. Occasionally a set has been left behind by a previous guest, but do not plan around that. Rentals are easy to arrange. At Honua Kai in Kaanapali, Maui, the on-site Aqualani desk handles beach rentals and snorkel gear. For example, near our Waikiki units you can rent snorkel gear right across the street at Snorkel Bob's. Our concierge team can also arrange rentals, or a guided snorkel or surf tour through vetted vendors. Email concierge@kbmresorts.com and include your property. If Molokini is on your list, note that snorkel cruises to Molokini leave from Ma'alaea Harbor. Trips departing from Kaanapali Beach or Lahaina Harbor do not reach it.

Reef-safe sunscreen: state law and Maui County rules

Since January 1, 2021, Hawaii law (Act 104) has banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription. Maui County goes further. Under Ordinance 5306, effective October 1, 2022, only mineral sunscreens, meaning those made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, may be sold, distributed or used without a prescription. The county advises choosing non-nanotized zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and checking the ingredient list even when a label says reef safe. Guided ocean activities also require reef-safe sunscreen, so having the right bottle in your bag before the tour saves a scramble at the dock.

What to actually pack

Because the towels, umbrella, chairs and cooler are usually waiting for you, your bag can stay light. Pack a mineral sunscreen that meets the guidelines above, a rash guard or sun shirt, a reusable water bottle and a dry bag for your phone. If you have a favorite mask and snorkel that fits your face well, bring it, since a familiar fit makes the water more enjoyable. Otherwise plan to rent. Families with young children may want to bring a swim diaper or two and a hat for each child. If you want help planning the beach side of your trip, email concierge@kbmresorts.com with your property and dates.

Beach package contents can vary by property, so confirm what is in your specific unit with KBM before you travel. Sunscreen rules can change, so check the current Hawaii State Legislature and Maui County guidance before you pack.
